Halstead was originally a Mennonite community, but later German Catholic immigrants made their home in the community as well. These two religious groups continue to comprise a significant percentage of the population. The First Mennonite Church is a large congregation, and the Sacred Heart Catholic Parish serves Halstead and a number of surrounding communities. Additionally, the Holdeman Mennonites have a fairly large church just west of Halstead and another just a few miles north of town. The First United Methodist Church has one of the largest congregations in Halstead. The city is also served by Presbyterian, Baptist and Church of Christ denominations.
